Our global network of Google Cloud regions underpins all of the important work we do for our customers. With 35 regions, 106 zones, 173 network edge locations and 22 subsea cables available to serve customers in over 200 countries and territories, Google Cloud’s infrastructure supports digital transformations for organizations across the globe. Today, we’re excited to announce we are bringing new Google Cloud regions to five more countries to meet the needs of our growing customer base: Austria, Greece, Norway, South Africa, and Sweden. This builds on recent announcements we made in August to add cloud regions in Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, and Thailand. At the same time, we’ve been delivering on previous commitments, opening five new regions so far this year, in Milan, Italy; Paris, France; Madrid, Spain; Columbus, Ohio; and Dallas, Texas. These cloud regions help bring innovations from across Google closer to our customers around the globe, and provide a platform that enables organizations to transform the way they do business.Google Cloud customers, like Elvia, Erste Bank, Pepkor IT, Spotify, Telia, and Vienna Insurance Group depend on our global network to drive innovation, securely deliver faster and more reliable customer experiences, and accelerate growth.

  • “The transition to carbon neutrality demands digitization of the energy system. Old and new actors in the energy space need the ability to operate together through real time data and shared analytics. Flexible and scalable solutions in the public cloud are decisive to solve the challenge. At the same time, it is more important than ever to locally protect critical infrastructure. A new Google Cloud region in Norway gives us the opportunity to solve both challenges. It is great news for the energy system of tomorrow.” – Jon Andreas Pretorius, Chief Information Officer, Elvia
  • “The commitment of Google Cloud to Austria as a physical data hub was a decisive factor for our decision to partner with Google Cloud. Hosting parts of our development efforts in the cloud is an important factor for our successful innovation strategy. Yet, as a bank we cannot make any compromise when it comes to data safety.”– Dietmar Böckmann, Managing Director, Erste Bank
  • “Pepkor IT is using Google Cloud to enrich lives through innovation. Our Big Data landscape consists of a much broader and deeper set of data than ever before. We process huge volumes of data at the speed of light. The environment enables our business partners to do any type of analytics, so that they can make better and faster decisions.” – Gabrie Gouws, Chief Information Officer, Pepkor IT
  • “As a cutting edge technology company, Spotify values its partnership with Google Cloud as an important part of our ongoing growth and innovation journey. Having our infrastructure managed for us streamlines our ability to concentrate on what’s important to our users and give them the experiences they know and love about Spotify. As a global business, based in Sweden, we are pleased to see continued investment in Scandinavia, and Sweden in particular, and with it the continued and important progress of sustainability in the infrastructure world.”– Tyson Singer, Vice President of Technology and Platforms, Spotify
  • “Telia’s purpose is to reinvent better connected living. And, as the leader in digital communication services to Sweden, the Nordics and the Baltics, we take responsibility for ensuring our customers can rely on and trust the connectivity that enables them to live their lives to the fullest. The establishment of a new Google Cloud region here in Sweden will therefore support Telia’s purpose and commitment to being the most trusted provider of connectivity services to Swedish individuals, households and enterprises.”-Allison Kirkby, President and CEO, Telia Company
  • “Security and Trust are core values for Vienna Insurance Group and we live them every day for our customers. We are pleased to see that Google Cloud with a portfolio of best-in-class security technologies is investing in Austria and thereby strengthening digital transformation in a secure and sovereign environment.”– Mag. Roland Gröll, Managing Board Director, Vienna Insurance Group

Local economic impact

Google Cloud regions help contribute to local economic and job growth in the markets where we operate. According to preliminary estimates from AlphaBeta Economics (part of Access Partnership) commissioned by Google, the nine new Google Cloud regions we’ve announced this year are expected to collectively contribute a cumulative USD 40.2 billion to GDP by 2030 and support the creation of more than 314,400 jobs in that year. At the regional level, here’s how those numbers break down:

  • The three Google Cloud regions announced in Asia and the Pacific this year are projected to contribute an estimated USD 10 billion to APAC’s GDP by 2030, and support the creation of 86,500 jobs in 2030.
  • The five cloud regions announced this year across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, are projected to contribute a cumulative USD18.9 billion to EMEA’s GDP by 2030, and support the creation of more than 110,500 jobs in 2030.
  • In Latin America, the cloud region announced this year in Mexico is projected to contribute a cumulative USD 11.2 billion to the country’s GDP by 2030, and support the creation of more than 117,000 jobs there in 2030.

For countries like Greece, and leaders like Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the economic impact of the new Google Cloud region will help Greece become a technology leader:

  • “In only 40 months, Greece has turned its troubles into opportunities, thus now becoming a leader in the digital development race, where it once trailed. Observers from abroad, once filled with distrust, are now offering their hands as willing partners. Our country is no longer just a consumer, but a service and technology generator. At the same time, it is attracting important and robust investments. The best proof of this shift is the new cloud region that Google is developing in Greece. An additional link in the chain of significant business plans that became reality these past three years, it will generate national wealth, and new well-paying jobs, inhibiting the departure of Greek scientists abroad.” – Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece

We’re excited to continue to bring a transformation cloud to new regions, accelerating customer innovation with solutions for unifying and analyzing data, open app and infrastructure modernization, communication and collaboration, cybersecurity, and sustainability. We can’t wait to see how you’ll innovate and build. Don’t miss the infrastructure sessions at this year’s Google Cloud Next to learn more.
